Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, with Scott Boland set to take his place in the playing XI for the one-off match starting at The Oval on Wednesday, reported Reuters.
Hazlewood's participation in the WTC final was in doubt due to a side injury that resurfaced during his limited appearances in the recent Indian Premier League. He also faced challenges with a left Achilles issue.
Despite his hopes of playing, Hazlewood was replaced by Michael Neser in the 15-man squad, but it is expected that Boland will join captain Pat Cummins and left-arm quick Mitchell Starc as Australia's third fast bowler.
"Josh was very close to being cleared for play, but we are mindful of our upcoming schedule, as this is not a standalone test match for us," said chief selector George Bailey on Sunday.
"This decision will provide Josh with an ideal preparation leading into Edgbaston," Bailey added, referring to the Ashes series against England beginning on June 16.
"With six test matches in a little over seven weeks, we will need all of our fast bowling resources."
Neser and Sean Abbott have left their county commitments to train with the Australian squad in Beckenham.
"Michael has shown strong form in county cricket, and knowing that he was nearby allowed him to continue playing while being available for us," Bailey explained.
"He adds great depth to our fast bowling group."
Coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged the tight turnaround between the WTC final and the Ashes series, emphasizing the need for effective management of the fast bowling resources.
"We are excited about the WTC final, but we must quickly shift our focus to England and the Ashes," McDonald stated. "Considering the circumstances, there will always be considerations regarding player management... I expect there to be some rotation among the fast bowlers."
