In a dazzling spectacle at the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador, Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palacios made history by clinching the coveted title of Miss Universe 2023. The 72nd edition of the prestigious beauty pageant reached its zenith on November 19, with Palacios besting her competitors, notably India's Shweta Sharda.
The crowning moment unfolded as the reigning Miss Universe 2022, USA's R'Bonney Gabriel, passed on the prestigious title to the 23-year-old Nicaraguan beauty. Sheynnis Palacios, a TV host and model, stood out not only for her striking presence but also for her thoughtful response during the final round.
When posed with the question of whose life she would choose to experience for a day, Palacios selected the 18th-century British philosopher and feminist, Mary Wollstonecraft. Citing Wollstonecraft's trailblazing efforts that broke societal boundaries, Palacios emphasized the limitless opportunities available to women today. In her response, translated by CNN, she stated, "There are no limitations for women today."
Palacios, who hails from Nicaragua's capital city, expressed her gratitude and dedication to fulfilling childhood dreams in a heartfelt Instagram post just hours before the final. Writing in Spanish, she encouraged aspiring individuals, particularly young girls, to dream big and surpass obstacles with determination, perseverance, and passion.
The newly crowned Miss Universe has a rich history in pageantry, having previously secured the titles of Miss Teen Nicaragua 2016 and Miss World Nicaragua 2020. She also demonstrated her prowess on the international stage by reaching the Top 40 at Miss World 2021. Beyond the glamour of the pageant world, Sheynnis Palacios is a dedicated student, having pursued mass communications at the Central American University, Managua (Universidad Centroamericana), all while excelling in varsity volleyball, according to Harpers Bazaar Arabia.
